How to Make Pet Dental Care Part of Your Daily Routine

At Animal Dental Care and Oral Surgery, we see firsthand how much of a difference at-home dental care makes in the lives of pets. Left untreated, dental disease can lead to painful infections, tooth loss, and even impact vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. The good news is that most of these problems can be prevented. By incorporating daily pet dental care into your routine, you can protect your pet’s oral health and overall well-being.

1. Start Gradually and Stay Consistent

Toothbrushing doesn’t have to be stressful. Begin by letting your pet sniff and lick a pet-safe toothpaste to get comfortable with the process. Then, slowly introduce a toothbrush or dental wipe, starting with short sessions of just a few seconds. With time and consistency, brushing will become a familiar and routine part of your pet’s day.

2. Use Veterinary-Approved Products

Always use dental products specifically made for pets. Human toothpaste can contain toxic ingredients such as xylitol or fluoride. Instead, choose veterinary-recommended toothbrushes, toothpaste, or dental wipes. If brushing isn’t yet possible, supportive products such as water additives, oral rinses, and appropriate dental treats can help—but brushing remains the most effective way to keep teeth clean.

3. Incorporate Dental Care into Your Schedule

The best way to stay on track with daily pet dental care is to link it to something you already do each day. Many pet owners brush their dog’s teeth after an evening walk or clean their cat’s teeth following mealtime. By connecting dental care with an existing habit, it quickly becomes a sustainable part of your routine. You may even find that your pet reminds you at these key times each day to brush their teeth!

4. Keep the Experience Positive

Pets respond best when dental care feels rewarding. Keep sessions calm and brief, praise your pet throughout, and finish with affection or a dental-friendly treat. These positive associations will help your pet view toothbrushing as something enjoyable instead of stressful. If daily brushing becomes a battle, you will likely not succeed. No one wants a daily rodeo experience with their pet.

5. Add Support With Dental Chews and Toys

While brushing is the gold standard, VOHC-approved dental chews and toys can provide additional help in reducing plaque and tartar. These products should be used as a supplement, not a replacement, for toothbrushing and professional dental care. Most dogs and cats still need to have their teeth professionally cleaned under anesthesia at least once a year, if not more frequently.
