How Vets Use Dental Charts to Track Your Pet’s Oral Health

As a board-certified veterinary dentist at Animal Dental Care and Oral Surgery, I often explain to pet owners that one of the most important tools we use during dental exams isn’t just what you see on our cone beam CT (CBCT) scan or dental radiographs or in the exam room, it’s the dental chart.

A dental chart is essentially your pet’s oral health “medical record,” designed specifically for the mouth. It allows us to carefully document and monitor every tooth, gum condition, and oral abnormality over time. This process of tracking pet oral health is what helps us catch problems early and keep your dog or cat’s mouth as healthy as possible.

What Exactly Is a Veterinary Dental Chart?

A dental chart is a diagram of your pet’s mouth that lists every tooth by name and number. The Tridan system of tooth numbering for pets has now become universally accepted in the veterinary profession. During an exam or procedure, we use the chart to note:

  • Which teeth are present or missing
  • Areas of tartar, gingivitis, or gum recession
  • Fractured or worn teeth
  • Tooth mobility or crowding
  • Abnormal growths, lesions, or resorptive lesions (especially common in cats)

In addition, we record CBCT scan/radiographic findings, such as bone loss or hidden root disease, that can’t be seen on the surface.

Why Do Dental Charts Matter for Tracking Pet Oral Health?

Dental disease progresses gradually. Without a system to document subtle changes, it’s easy for early warning signs to be overlooked. A dental chart allows us to:

  • Track changes over time – If a tooth shows mild mobility or early bone loss today, we’ll be able to compare it at the next visit.
  • Plan treatment – Charts help guide us in deciding whether a tooth can be saved, needs monitoring, or should be extracted.
  • Communicate clearly – Charts provide a visual record that helps us explain your pet’s condition and treatment plan to you in detail.
  • Ensure thoroughness – By working tooth by tooth, we don’t miss anything, even tiny abnormalities. Each and every tooth is probed and examined. While we stress the importance of advanced imaging, particularly CBCT scanning, the oral examination remains our most effective diagnostic tool.

How We Use Charts for Tracking Pet Oral Health in Our Practice

At Animal Dental Care and Oral Surgery, every dental procedure includes a full oral exam, CBCT scan with possible dental radiographs, and an updated chart. We build a complete oral history for your pet, so even if problems develop years later, we can look back and see exactly when changes began and how they have been treated.

This careful documentation is especially valuable for pets with chronic dental issues, like cats with resorptive lesions or dogs prone to fractured teeth or that are prone to periodontal disease.

By tracking pet oral health visit after visit, we can tailor the best preventive and treatment strategies for your companion.

What This Means for Your Pet

While you may never see the chart itself, you benefit from it every time your veterinarian explains what’s going on in your pet’s mouth. It ensures that your pet’s dental care is consistent, accurate, and proactive.

Final Thoughts

Dental charts may look like simple paperwork, but they’re one of the most powerful tools we have in veterinary dentistry. By tracking pet oral health through detailed charts and X-rays, we can provide better care, prevent painful problems, and help your pet enjoy a healthier, happier life.

At Animal Dental Care and Oral Surgery, we believe your pet deserves the same thorough documentation and attention to detail you’d expect in your own dental visits. If you have questions about your pet’s dental history or upcoming procedure, we’d be happy to walk you through the process.
